Hey Reader,
I know how hard it is to focus and stay on a paragraph when facing ADHD.
It took me a long time not to digress while reading. I still do it sometimes, but it has become 10x less.
To make it to the point, there are several methods to enhance your reading and knowledge retention:
1) Read something that spikes your curiosity and you find interesting.
When ADHD minds finally find something they enjoy, we can get addicted. We just need to learn to use our hyperfocus effectively and trigger it on command.
The simplest thing is just to read something you enjoy or while you are problem-aware of it. (Active curiosity)
In short, when you are facing a specific problem, it's best to consume books, articles or content related to the problem, to enhance your learning experience and retain the information better, because you can connect it to something "useful".
2) Read in the morning, when your mind is still fresh.
Read before engaging in too stimulating activities, such as training, watching videos, talking to people, or driving.
Our mind and brain waves are most fresh and "flowy" in the morning. Keep it this way by taking a book, article or newsletter in front of your eyes, and indulge in this "boredom" or slow wave activity. It is far more difficult, nearly impossible, for ADHD people to shift from fast brain waves to slow waves.
The simplest way would be to avoid entering this fast brain wave state as soon as you wake up.
3) Read while being caffeinated.
If you are a coffee, matcha, or black tea drinker, consider drinking coffee not as a pleasure, but as a gateway "drug" into focus and alertness.
This not only aids in work, but also in reading and retaining knowledge.
4) Read while you watch.
I discovered this around a year ago.
I knew that reading in the morning was easy and that retaining the knowledge was also easier. Still, the later in the day it occurred, the harder it was for me to focus, because I needed more stimulation or a greater involvement of my senses.
Then I started to use a new app called "Readwise Reader" (no affiliation), which also connects to Kortex. (affiliate)
Here is a screenshot of what it could look like:
This helped me consume content more intentionally and retain the information more effectively. The best thing is that I can mark and tag the information from the YouTube video (which doesn't even have ads) and save the data into Kortex, which I can use later on (after syncing) for writing.
Sadly, the tool is not free, but it is worth the cost.
I hope this information was helpful.
If you have tested any of the four things, which one can you stick to best?
Thank you, and until Saturday!
Jeff
