Maybe you have realized that your mind likes to explore.
Sometimes a bit much.
Your ADHD mind is created for exploration, innovation and creation.
ADHD is not a "newly" discovered psychological condition. It has been a different brain wiring for centuries.
Brilliant individuals like Leonardo DaVinci or Alexander the Great might have had ADHD as well.
Just look at the work of DaVinci or that of Alexander the Great, who started exploration at the age of 25. You quickly realize ADHD is not a burden; it just needs to be channelled into mastery.
I know this is not an easy task, as it took me between 1 and 2 years, equivalent to a full-time job, to create an organized and focused mind. However, investing these 1-2 years has been the best and probably most expensive investment of my life.
Overall, it took me six months to rewire my brain, but a year to gain the clarity that I needed to work on my focus and ADHD brain wiring.
And another 6 months to make a business out of it, because I feel I need to share my discoveries and how I achieved an organized mind to help others and also continue my life's work.
Become an Explorer, Innovator and Creator.
I know the world is not made for ADHD people, because most jobs are boring, tedious, and not stimulating at all. I've been there as well.
And we sit all day, starting as early as kids in school.
However, I assume that you or most of the readers are still employed, or perhaps some of you are freelancers.
- Exploration can occur outside or inside oneself.
- Innovation can occur in work or personal life.
- Creator (of your life) can be accomplished through various domains.
However, in many cases, this connects to people's work, as one-third of our lives is spent working, another third is spent sleeping, and the remaining third is spent on whatever we choose to do.
Work is a non-negotiable, so it's best to make it enjoyable and create an exploratory, innovative, or creative environment that fosters a state of flow.
Flow is the optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best, "flow refers to those "in the zone" moments where focus gets so intense that everything else disappears. Action and awareness start to merge. Our sense of self vanishes. Our sense of time as well. And all aspects of performance, both mental and physical, go through the roof. - Steven Kotler (Flow Research Collection)
To make work more enjoyable, fun, creative, innovative or exploratory, we first need to change our mental view towards work.
"Work" is a perception of your consciousness, which either improves your life or degrades it.
There is scientific research that suggests when you are excited to wake up the next day, you will sleep better. From my perspective, it's essential to make the most of it.
If you don't enjoy your work, here are a few techniques I've encountered to make it more enjoyable and also foster a state of flow.
- Try not to disrupt your brain before work; this mostly starts with the phone. The phone disrupts the flow and affects your brain waves. If you are going to work, try to limit your use of the telephone and especially social media before you start work. Try to avoid everything that could trigger negative thoughts.
- Keep your morning "boring"; this will help you make the first task less tedious, all tasks less boring, or transition more easily into a work state.
- Avoid a heavy stomach. I also recommend people fast or at least avoid carbs. People with ADHD are more sensitive to insulin spikes, which produce brain fog. It's challenging to maintain a focused brain state afterwards. Women should fast for around 12 hours, and men's fasting window should start at 16 hours.
- When fasting and working, coffee is a great stimulant to make the "boring" computer work more stimulating. Men can drink coffee on an empty stomach. (which can lead to stomach pain if consumed too much.) For women, it is recommended not to drink it on an empty stomach due to the higher increase in cortisol (if you do, it's all good). For many women, coffee may be too strong, so I recommend consuming it with L-Theanine and lemon balm, or with milk or any other low insulin-spiking beverage (not oat milk, as it spikes insulin heavily). Matcha helps women feel less jittery due to its L-Theanine content, making it a great choice.
- If you don't consume any coffee, matcha, yerba mate, or black tea, you can opt for 100% dark chocolate (although it also contains caffeine) or consider taking L-theanine or lion's mane to improve focus.
- Movement, cold showers, training, salt and hydration help to focus better afterwards. If you consume coffee in the morning, it is not particularly necessary.
- To wake up better, you can get sunlight either right into your room before waking up or get it outside, where it contains more light exposure, which helps regulate your circadian rhythm and makes you feel more awake.
- To make your actual work more engaging, I would recommend avoiding lengthy conversations with colleagues in the morning, if possible; in many cases, it's more engaging and stimulating than your actual work. If your job involves writing, reading, analyzing, or something visually oriented, do this first, as it can trigger a flow state and increase your dopamine levels, making your entire workday more productive. Win the morning, to win the day.
- Make your space more flowy. Reduce things on the table, keep it clean and organized, ideally before you leave for the next day. Utilize attractive gadgets, tools, or products to make it more engaging and enjoyable. I like gaming peripherals; they make my work on the computer more engaging. Music can also be helpful when we need to execute tedious tasks or listen to podcasts while doing repetitive tasks, such as laundry and dishes.
I could make the list infinitely long, but I hope these little tips and tricks already help you to become more exploratory, innovative or creative.
The best way is to have complete freedom and autonomy over one's schedule, which, in my opinion, is only achievable through entrepreneurship, sometimes not even then, because some people choose the wrong business model, as I did in the past with my startup, Xanevo.
I hope it helps. Until Saturday!
