The deeper work is about human motivation and designing systems that engage people in meaningful ways. - Yu-kai Chou
Gamification helps elevate your journey, make progress in life, and maintain momentum.
The more gamified an experience is and the less "just get the work done" there is, the more ADHD people are driving in their environment.
The goal is human-focused design (engagement and motivation), not just "get the job done".
Most of the readers here (probably you as well) just discovered me in the last 5 months, but I have been posting content for over a year now.
- It took me 8 months to get to 200 subscribers.
- And only 5 months to gain an additional 2.000 subscribers.
That's a 10x growth in close to half the time.
The only possible way for me, as an ADHD individual, was to enjoy the process through gamification.
- I have built gamified routines.
- Gamified systems in Notion and Kortex.
- Even built little apps and digital products.
- Created philosophies, concepts, unique mechanisms and frameworks.
- I created mental models and stories to explain the human mind and the universe.
After leaving my startup, I knew that purpose, passion, and profit needed to align to create the ultimate human adventure — a life custom-tailored.
Business is shallow.
It needs to be a vessel for purpose, growth, and the overall discovery of truth.
Without a gamified experience, you won't keep climbing, because most work environments aren't designed for ADHD.
Climbing an actual mountain gives you an elevated experience; you create a more sensual experience —one that naturally triggers dopamine, curiosity, and novelty.
But being inside all day in our western environment doesn't give enough stimulation to the ADHD mind, to "function" properly.
Meaning it is your responsibility to trigger this for yourself, to gamify your life and work, to create the optimal human adventure for your individual self.
And this is how:
1) You Need A Story.
A story consists of a hero and an anti-hero.
Two characters, the protagonist and the anti-protagonist.
The hero wants to defeat the anti-hero's "evil" vision. (The anti-hero thinks he is the hero. More to that later.)
- Mario vs Bowser to rescue Princess Peach.
- The Avengers against Thanos to save half of the people in the universe.
- Ash Ketchum against Team Rocket to save the Pokémon.
The hero is the future you, and the anti-hero is your current self you want to defeat:
- This can be your weight.
- This can be your habit.
- This can be your focus.
- This can be your ADHD.
- This can be your financial circumstance.
You need to have a clear vision of why you want to defeat your current self. A bigger purpose behind it.
Pointing out your anti-hero is NOT enough.
Many people look in the mirror, unhappy with their current life, but still don't do anything about it.
The pain of staying the same must outweigh the fear of change.
It needs to hurt so much that you don't see another way out than to face the storm and get into the discomfort.
- For most men, this needs to be hitting rock bottom—a state of mental clarity. Most men experience this far too late in life. (Men's midlife crises. Good YouTube video)
- For women, this can be emotional exhaustion, when they are given too much and lose themselves, and they feel emotionally depleted. (I am not a woman; this is just theoretical.)
If you want a more practical example, here is a template with questions.
2) Create Philosophies, Concepts, Mechanisms and Frameworks.
One way to make work 10x more enjoyable and gamified is to create a mind universe around philosophies, concepts, mechanisms and frameworks.
If you are reading this newsletter a bit longer, I often preach about the power of your mind universe.
Most people think the universe exists only outside of them, but it’s also within.
There’s a whole inner universe waiting to be discovered.
Think of the Marvel Universe Stan Lee has created. There is a deeper reason behind his creation.
→ Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
What I want to give you is how to create a mind universe, which is then projected as a business universe. (personal branding)
That’s where the magic happens — when you start exploring, understanding, and connecting with that internal universe.
- Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, and reason. (They Why)
- Concepts are ideas or mental models that help us understand and categorize the world. (The Where)
- A Unique Mechanism is a distinctive process, framework, or system. (The How)
How to create these?
- You come up with your own idea or emulate someone else's. (Here is another template, which you put underneath the one before)
-
You put this idea (for example: Atomic Habits by James Clear) into the idea section of your Mastery Notes (Template 3). From the idea of someone else, you emulate it:
- For example, instead of 1% better every day, I talk about the Human Adventure —the constant growth and development of yourself and the optimal human experience.
- Or the P.A.R.A. Method. I created my own method, which I call "The Chaos To Clarity Method". This is entirely different, but I used the idea of an organization system from Tiago Forte.
- For example, Mastery Notes is inspired by "KoreNotes" by Dan Koe, a combination of the book "Mastery" by George Leonard. And Dan Koe emulated Niklas Luhmann's Zettelkasten Method.
- You can fill out the templates, but I recommend not doing everything at once. Keep it in the back of your mind, and if you have the spark of an idea (The Jimmy Neutron Effect), get back to these templates and add to them. This is a never-ending game → the infinite game (by Simon Sinek).
3) Actionable Gamification by Yu-kai Chou
So far, I have talked about my own methods and ideas; now I want to discuss the concept of the book Actionable Gamification by Yu-Kai Chou.
He talks about the Octalysis Framework with the 8 Core Drives:
Since I started this creator journey last September 2024, I have actually developed similar systems, philosophies, concepts, and frameworks.
The point is that humans "see the same things," but interpret them differently due to their own perceptions.
Looking at his eight core drives and connecting this to my year of research, writing and business:
1) Epic Meaning & Calling: People believe they are doing something greater than themselves or “were chosen”.
→ Purpose. (A quest in life)
2) Development & Accomplishment: The internal drive to make progress, develop skills, and overcome challenges.
→ The Human Adventure. (The constant search for growth & evolution)
3) Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback: Being allowed to experiment, explore options, receive feedback, and iterate.
→ Flow triggers to achieve Flow Mastery. (By Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Steven Kotler)
4) Ownership & Possession: When users feel they own something (virtually or physically), they are motivated to improve or protect it.
→ Accountability and High-Agency, which results in a business. Becoming a Creatorpreneur is becoming a Librarian of the Mind Library. (A philosophical concept of mine.)
5) Social Influence & Relatedness: Motivation coming from social factors: mentorship, competition, friendship, recognition.
→ Creatorpreneurship, where dopamine, novelty and curiosity seamlessly integrate into a cohesive life's work experience.
6) Scarcity & Impatience: Wanting something because it’s rare, exclusive or because you must act quickly.
→ Mastering the art of persuasion and psychological triggers. (Money Mastery)
7) Unpredictability & Curiosity: Engaged when you don’t know what will happen next—surprise, mystery.
→ Posting content. The question is whether the content goes viral, what people comment on, and how well it performs. (Flow Mastery and Creatorpreneurship)
8) Loss & Avoidance: Fear of losing something motivates action (e.g., streaks, decay, deadlines).
→ Routines and habits to achieve massive goals. Creating a non-negotiable calendar routine to achieve results.
The key takeaway to end this newsletter is to make up your own story in your mind —the one that makes sense to you.
- Your story
- Your philosophy, concepts, mechanisms and frameworks (systems).
- You put these into actionable projects, for example, my business consists of projects. Weekly newsletters and videos. Weekly training sessions and food prep. Weekly iterations and improvements of these projects.
You don't need to follow the philosophy and concepts of the Marvel Universe, Pokémon, Super Mario or any other story.
You create your own "game," your own "movie," your own story.
You create your "individual self" to create the optimal Human Adventure for yourself.
Whatever brings you closer to this is worth the pursuit.
Thank you for reading.
