🔥ADHD, Nervous System and Flow Dojo

Sometimes, all you need to focus on with ADHD is a flow dojo.

What is a flow dojo?

A quiet space where your nervous system feels safe and you can do your best work.

Where your ADHD mind doesn't think in its subconscious that a lion can attack you from behind.

For men, we call it "the cave"; for women, this might be "the garden", which would make sense as the counterpart to the cave. (feel free to pick your own name)

The flow dojo is this sacred place, the place of mastery of your craft.

For some, this might be the cute little cafe around the corner.

For some, it is a home office or setup.

But you need a space where you consistently go to and have full access to your "equipment."

Cafes seem to look good on Instagram, and in many cases, it works. I also work in Starbucks when travelling and conceptualized my entire 30-Day Challenge.

However, the best work I have accomplished, with the best flow in my entire life, was created in a dedicated home office or work setup, perfectly designed to remove every friction and flow blocker possible. I go in every morning and lock in for hours without any distractions.

My nervous system feels safe, and my brain won't get bored during work, because my frictionless equipment and setup make it possible to stay in the zone until hunger becomes unbearable.

I lock in seven days a week and consistently achieve at least 6 hours (with reading) of focused work. (4-5h of deep work)

The room is not left before noon, or the work is done. (except for coffee)

It is like being in a self-crafted video game (newsletter), where I am the main character (newsletter) and the creator of my universe.

This is especially essential for people with ADHD, because it is far too easy to distract us.

The moment I have the slightest distraction while being in the zone, and my mind wanders, I can be pulled out of it, and the line of interconnected thinking can be cut off, which is detrimental to my work.

An ADHD mind is not good at narrow-minded thinking, and that is something ADHD people need to accept. (which could also be explained by the left and right brain in spirituality, science or psychology)

Narrow-minded thinking is there for neurotypicals, and they enjoy it.

But in most cases, we don't, or I don't.

How To Build A Flow Dojo

The flow dojo for an ADHD person is crucial if you are eager to master your craft and find pure satisfaction in life. (same level of necessity as relationships)

Your work or purpose is the gift of God and the divine path you are born into.

(I recommend developing the skill to differentiate between the gut intuition of God and the gut intuition of an inflamed and traumatized gut. But you mostly know at the end which intuition was the divine intuition.)

A flow dojo is highly personalized to an individual.

I am a "retired gamer" (a joke), so I love gaming equipment to enhance my flow with gamified peripherals.

But you can adopt a few things like these:

  1. I recommend finding a place in your home, because it is the most sustainable one.
  2. If you have just a room, try to separate it from your "bed area"; this helps the mind to differentiate between work and sleep. → You could buy a separating wall. (I like the Japanese designs.)
  3. Make it cozy. Ideally, with warm lights placed intentionally.
  4. Get a standing desk. There are affordable options, and if you choose to do so, consider purchasing a standing mat, which can help reduce overall strain and fatigue.
  5. Stand 50%, sit 25% and move 25%. (based on science)
  6. You could buy a walking pad if you have a lot of work, but in most cases, I recommend getting outside for sunlight into your eyes and on your skin. (This solves many of your problems)
  7. Get a monitor. Seriously. A monitor is so much better for your neck than a laptop. Keep the monitor at eye level and consider buying one with a higher stand. Keep the monitor at arm's length.
  8. Get a high-quality chair—especially one with a back support to keep the S-curve of your spine and an armrest to relax your shoulders. Avoid leather, as it tends to get too warm during the summer and doesn't breathe well.

That's it. (from my current knowledge)

Most other things are personalized and optional.

Thanks for reading.
