ADHD was never the problem. The “science” was.
“Before blaming me, please read at least half of it, to form an opinion. It might change the view on your ADHD.”
You were probably like me in school:
- The one who was loud.
- The one who couldn’t focus.
- The one who was the burden for the teachers.
- You were never able to just finish the task.
- You were never able to just focus.
- You were never able to sit still.
That was my entire school time in a nutshell.
I was the kid “who was special”, in a bad way…
“Jeff, you are a constant topic in our faculty room.”
I was always the one who went against the traditional path, against the authorities, against “the rules”.
At a really young age, I had this feeling that something was wrong. That something doesn’t add up to what society and school are promising you.
The “average” life. The one they try to sell you on how amazing a corporate job is. How amazing it is to work 40 years in the same company, doing the same tedious work, coming home late to your significant other and arguing with them.
And science makes this worse:
- You need to take the pills, so you behave like neurotypicals who hate their jobs, but force themselves to do it.
- You need to fill out Excel sheets and sit in wooden chairs in a dark room all day. Whether this was at school, at university, or at your job.
- You need to follow the “rules”, the rules man-made…to create obedient soldiers for war. This is called the Prussian education system. (You can research it or read this historical article.)
Even worse, I see so much advice from psychologists on threads about ADHD:
“Take the damn medication.”
So you can work all day in front of a computer, sit in a chair all day, never see sunlight, never touch grass, and never enjoy the wonders of life?
ADHD is right-brain dominant, and Neurotypicals are left-brain dominant. The goal is unity. (A unified brain)
The Greeks called it hieros gamos: The Sacred Marriage.
But it’s not about marriage. It’s about combining both brain hemispheres.
Left and right. Logical and creative. Masculine and feminine. Yin and Yang.
It’s about maintaining balance within. (Most people tend towards the extremes)
This is what a lot of my new research is looking at is how the left and the right hemispheres, they tend to be mismatched and imbalanced in modern life. And they explain the explosion of depression and anxiety is we spend too much time in the left side of our heads and not enough time in the right side of our heads. One of the ways to open up the right hemisphere of your brain to find more meaning, to find more mystery, to find more love, to find more happiness, is actually to get more beauty into your life. And most people they get beauty into their lives through their leisure activities. This is one of the reasons that you have to be good at leisure, because you need to find meaning and mystery and happiness and love, etc. — Arthur Brooks

To understand what “ADHD” actually is, we can look at research papers and also old literature.
- Neurotypical people are left-brain dominant.
- ADHD/Neurodivergents are right-brain dominant.
Neurotypicals tend to see things more structurally. They tend to see more of a tree’s structure, but can struggle to see the big picture and its interconnections.
ADHD people see the big picture and its interconnections, but struggle to break it into structure.
As an example:
Left the structure and right the whole tree.
The goal of both neurotypicals and neurodivergents is to lean more towards their counterparts, to maintain an inner equilibrium.
→ Neurotypicals need to become more ADHD.
→ ADHD need to become more neurotypical.
Inner equilibrium maintains that balance.
- It’s the yin and yang.
- It’s solar and lunar (sun and moon).
- It’s the hieros gamos, the sacred marriage.
- It’s the left and right brain hemispheres.
- It’s masculine and feminine.
- It’s Adam and Eve.
In Jungian Psychology:
- An underdeveloped inner feminine (anima) can lead to compulsive emotional seeking.
- An underdeveloped inner masculine (animus) can lead to a lack of structure or direction.
In Greek Mythology:
Zeus split them in two as punishment. What we call love is the search for the other half.
Bible:
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. — Genesis 3:19 (KJV)
Neuroscience:
Cross-hemispheric gamma-band synchrony. Lutz & Davidson's 2004 PNAS study found long-term Tibetan meditators (10,000+ hours) self-generating this synchrony at levels 2-3x their own baseline. Flow states, creative insight, deep meditation, and psychedelic experience all show the same basic pattern: the left hemisphere's narrative self-monitoring goes quiet, the right hemisphere’s embodied presence expands, and integration increases across the whole brain.
To avoid confusion: You use both sides of your brain all the time; it’s more a matter of integration. But both sides of the brain have different dominant “skills”.
„Now, after hopefully proving to you that I am not crazy and illusional, we can continue this newsletter.“
You DON’T need medication. (Become the Explorer)
ADHD people have an explorer gene. DRD4-7R is the explorer gene.
DRD4 is the gene that codes for the Dopamine D4 receptor — a receptor found densely in the brain's frontal lobes, the area governing attention, impulse control, and decision-making. The gene comes in variants defined by how many times a 48-base-pair sequence repeats. The most common version is 4 repeats (4R). The 7-repeat variant (7R) is the one linked to ADHD.
You were designed to explore.
The "disorder" is a mismatch between your ancient wiring and a modern world built for settlers/farmers. (To make the hierarchy work)
The universe or God doesn’t make mistakes. Only humans do. They make mistakes, many, many, many mistakes. That’s how we learn. We try to become perfect, as God is, or, better said, to get closer to him. But we can’t, we have finite minds. We can’t imagine the infinite.
You weren't designed for the 9-to-5 jobs, the “traditional path”, the “average life”.
→ Neurotypicals are the farmers. They can do the “boring sh*t” every single day.
→ ADHD’ers are the hunters. Highly aware, highly sensitive and highly dopamine driven.
Geniuses like Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, and Steve Jobs understood this and continued to follow their curiosities, which led to extraordinary output. And studies suggest DaVinci, Einstein and Steve Jobs might have had ADHD.
Even Alexander the Great, who conquered the entire Persian Empire, stretching from Greece to Egypt to modern-day Iran by the age of 25, probably had ADHD.
Was there any medication at this time?
No.
ADHD medication is more like a painkiller or a drug. It just gives you the instant outcome, but with a cost.
But you can achieve the things you want without medication. I think you can achieve even better results and use your hyperfocus and hyperactivity to your advantage. But it also depends on your goals.
If you want a boring job, doing Excel all day, sitting in chairs all day, you can take the medication. But your body, in the long run, will probably suffer based on that.
For example:
I sleep only 6-7 hours, for example. I can train like a psycho. I can do triathlons and run marathons. In most cases, I can’t even use all my energy in a day because I have too much. I only feel exhausted if I burn more than 2000kcal extra per day. Which is a 2-hour run or a 3-hour bike ride.
I actually burned yesterday 2300kcal, and I still wasn’t tired. I don’t want to brag. It’s just a positive thing about ADHD.
How to become “The Explorer” in a world built for farmers?
Instead of exploring nature and travel (what you should do as well), explore & discover your mind.
Explore God’s mind, just from the finite perspective.
We can explore space. We can explore the Earth. We can explore our minds.
The more we explore, whether internally or externally, the more we grow, gain wisdom, and find overall happiness. Life only feels dull if we don’t move, if we don’t explore, if we only consume.
And we can create an environment that fosters this hunter-and-explorer state of mind. I do it every single day in front of my computer, I don’t move, but my mind moves. I explore an entire universe inside my mind. I see mental images as I would go out in nature to “hunt”. Curiosity is involved, dopamine is involved, serotonin is involved, anandamide is involved, and endorphins are involved. The entire flow cocktail, while in front of a computer, is like playing a video game, but instead of consuming it, I create it.
This is how I gamify my mind and how my work becomes addictive.
How can you practice this mental exploration?
1) Write to structure your thinking.
Instead of only writing, you need to curate simultaneously. This means that while you write, you also organize the information so it is easy to find again.
Make every thought searchable, filterable, and organized.
See image below:
2) Create philosophies, ideas and concepts.
To improve your mental imagery in this exploration, I recommend instantly manifesting your thoughts using AI image generation or Claude & Figma.
So you not only write about it and have a rough mental image, but you also create a “physical” image to visualize, whether for yourself or for your personal brand, business, world, universe, etc.
That’s how I currently try to visualize my personal brand:
3) Break it down into Frameworks, Mechanisms and Processes.
Try to become a master.
There is always a master you can be a student towards, and you can always be a master towards students.
Deepen your thinking, your worldbuilding, your mental exploration, by teaching it to others.
Start a personal brand, a creator business, a YouTube channel, a book club, a pilates class, whatever it is, share what you have inside of your mind.
Turn your scars into gold: Your wounds become your greatest asset. The suffering that you have endured and survived is gold for others. For you, it might be just wounds and scars, but for others, it is pure gold. Share it with others, and you will not only be rewarded for your pain but also bring more light and wisdom into the world.
→ If you want to create images, use ChatGPT. (Image on the left is from ChatGPT)
→ If you want to create illustrations inside Figma, use Claude to create them. (Background design is from Claude, which designs it in Figma)
Build and create your own little Marvel Universe, not for the sake of making money, but for the sake of discovering yourself. Money is just the proof of helping others. The more people you help through “alchemizing” your scars into gold, the more you are being rewarded with wealth, because it shows that what you teach works.
